We were asked by our client to provide a complete electrical enclosure design which was to include full electrical system integration for 1.5MW Power Supply units for their client. This was part of the Manchester Metro Tram project. The purpose of the enclosures was to provide overhead power supply for the trams. All the power units were containerised.
The enclosure design needed to accommodate our customers electrical design & integrate with all site interface requirements so a busduct interface was an additional requirement. Our client provided an electrical specification highlighting such areas such as creepage and clearance, ventilation and IP rating requirements. This enabled us to make good progress with the mechanical outline of the cubicle. Once we had an outline cubicle design we then started to work closer with our customers electrical Engineers on the system integration as this was least risk under a tight delivery schedule.
The containerised units contained a number of mild steel electrical enclosures along with a power transformer.
The enclosures had to adhere to all the safety specifications such as low smoke zero halogen paint coatings and non metallic materials as set out in the specification and all non metallics adhered to UL94/V0 fire and smoke specifications.
